Steel’s Strong Start to the New Year

Capacity utilization on the rise

For the year through January 11, capacity utilization in the American steel industry reached 82.1% — a 2.3% year-over-year increase. Steel mills produced 3.01 million tons during this period. That’s according to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Read the full story.

Production increase by region

An article in the Northwest Indiana Times expands on the above AISI report with regional data to support the steel production increase. During the week ending January 11, mills in the Great Lakes region produced 677,000 tons of steel — a 1.65% increase over the previous week. During the same period, mills in the rest of the Midwest produced 214,000 tons and mills in the Southern region produced 721,000 tons. Read more here.

Strides in safety for U.S. Steel

Every company wants zero work-related employee injuries. U.S. Steel came close to it in 2019, with an OSHA Days Away from Work rate of 0.10. That’s seven times lower than the average for the U.S. steel industry as a whole, and a great achievement for such a large organization. Read the details.
